EVE, darn right it’s for you

A fleet on the move

After a short few days away from work, a miserable experience with a standardized test, and whatever scotch I had left, I turned on my reader and found this: Is EVE for you? Well, if it is not, it darn well should be! EVE Online is one of the most exciting and invigorating experiences that your mind, body, and soul could ever dream of undertaking (at least in the MMO world). EVE is a sandbox, in the truest sense of the word. You can be a member of a powerful alliance, a miner, a fighter, a pirate, or any profession you can imagine. This world, is your world.

A common goal of EVE players is to run, or be a member of, a powerful alliance, with military, industrial, and economic forces ready to dominate the galaxy. Alliances may grow to be the size of the empires that control the lawful places of New Eden. Diplomatic wings handle their affairs with other corporations as clandestine groups abscond from their latest mission of destruction. When war brews, massive fleets seek out enemy stations and swarm like angry wasps onto enemy positions. Propaganda wings spin out information in favor of their cause on the forums and public relations become important as new annexation plans are presented before the players for justification.

For the capitalist in you, you may desire to run things on your own at one of the trade hubs within the game. Ore, ammunition, ships, and starbases are all in dire need of a customer. Manufacturers need to sell their goods, corporations need the material to fuel their wars, and you are the means for the buyers and sellers to come together and make running this world possible. Take for example, the career of Chribba. As featured on Massively, he makes a living being a trustworthy capsuleer, brokering deals for parties transferring billions of isk worth of goods between clients from all walks of life. Still not enough for you?

If the venture capitalist route is not for you, there is always pirating and general mayhem. Flying a rifter in and out of the asteroid belts in low sec can be a profitable venture, especially if you join a pirate corporation. If that is not your style, but all out destruction, danger, and adventure is, take a journey into 0.0 and join one of the alliances struggling to dominate the lawless regions or just go out and hunt.

EVE is a world you mold, with no rails, and the only limit is the amount of time you choose to devote to being a part of it all. The world is yours, truly, and if you play your cards right, you may find yourself on top of it with legions of followers ready to do your bidding. The best part of this is? Those minions, friends, soldiers, and industrialists are all real people, actively playing in the sand and eager to make their part of it all just as exhilarating as yours. You do not adapt to EVE, EVE adapts to you.
